Most people consider me a realist. What is realism in art? Is it the exact reproduction of what the eye sees? There are all kinds of realism, including emotional realism, conceptual realism, perceptual realism, etc.
I try to make a statement while working in the realist style, and consider getting my thoughts across to the viewer more important than reproducing the form exactly. You add realism up to a certain point and then you have to allow the viewer to make that final leap of the imagination.
Sometimes you have to change something from its true form to give it emotional realism. Perhaps an exaggerated tilt of the head, or darker than natural shadows on the face to set a mood and say something about the individual. There is an inner realism that is striving to be brought to the surface. In my mind, this is the most important aspect of my work.
