Colour intrigues me and putting unusual combinations together warms my soul. When working on a piece, even though I may start pretty pale, before long the intense colours come out - fuschia with orange, lime green and chartreuse, purple and cobalt blue. If that doesn’t give me the excitement in the piece that I want, then out come the complimentary colours to bring out the zing. Green gets placed in the reds, yellow hangs out with the purple and orange neighbours blue. Then I am happy.
Patterns in fabrics affect me the same way. You know those wonderful packages of fat eights in all the colours are hard to resist. Then the challenge becomes how to make it work all together. The Madonna is a perfect example. All of the fabrics used came from a line of fabrics designed by Kaffe Fasset. The only one which doesn’t belong is the black which it needed so that the whole piece is grounded. It meant lots of playing and paying close attention to the tone of each piece rather that the print. The result in an unusual juxtaposition of fabrics.
