As a fiber artist, my goal is to articulate the marriage between the traditional craft of quilt-making with the visual imagery of artmaking, while maintaining the tactile quality of cloth. My work is the exploration of the relationship between image, abstraction, fragmentation and integration. This relationship is expressed by using the processes of surface design, collage and quiltmaking.
One element of my artmaking, is the development of imagery and transferring these visual representations onto fabric. I dye, paint, and transfer Xerox and photographic images onto cloth. I imprint images onto the fabric by screen printing or rust printing or by exposure to the sun. Pieces of paper, fabrics, objects and thread are then assembled to create a rich pattern of textures by the layering of images; whereby the cloth becomes the visualization on my mark making. My images are intuitive moments in time, of memories buried and obscured, of fragments remembered and edited, resulting in a new reality.
