My pieces are designed to give a sense of place and mood – but with paring down to a simple design element – the relationship of form and space. Colour and contrast have always been an important element in my work. It is the first visual reference, and sets the atmosphere of the work.
Abstract in style, both in form and thought – to give a hint of what might have been, but yet leave the ultimate definition to the viewer. Implications of the past – traces of history and places – some definite and some almost intangible.
Although concentrating on the textile element, I like strong contrasts, both in colour and medium. Our lives are a melange of the past and the present, as is the subject of my work. The medium I use relates strongly to the work – vintage cloth, worn linen, raw torn edges, visible stitches, overlays of dyes, paints, flashing, scrim etc., all contribute to the layering of the past and present.
